The Saint Joseph Academy club crew team heads into the fall season intent on growing following a successful 2015 campaign.
SJA returns 16 rowers, while adding 14 new varsity members from last year’s freshman and novice rosters. “We’re excited to add a strong sophomore class, and we’re expecting big things from this fall’s varsity squad.” The sophomores include eight rowers from the freshman 8+ team that finished 12th in the country.
In addition to the young rowers, seven of nine athletes on the national runner-up crew return. The squad will rely on those veteran members to provide experienced leadership in 2016.
“The 2017 senior class is the largest in team history,” said Zdankiewicz. “Currently they are the most successful group of athletes to come through SJA crew. We’re very optimistic to have such strong senior leadership for the team.”
Zdankiewicz looks forward to the season following three summer camps, which included over 45 incoming freshmen. The new rowers took part in the learning experience, with Zdankiewicz calling the class of 2020 one of the fastest freshmen teams to date.
The schedule highlight for the crew team is a home race to start the season on Sept. 17 along the Cuyahoga River at Rivergate Park.
One week later, the Jaguars will take part in the Cleveland Invitational on the Cuyahoga River. Three road trips to Columbus follow, with dates on Oct. 1 vs. Upper Arlington (Griggs Reservoir), Oct. 8 at the Columbus Fall Classic (Hoover Reservoir) and the Oct. 29 finale at the Blake Haxton Fall Invitational (Griggs Reservoir).
