For the second straight year, SJA is among the final 8 teams remaining in Northeast Ohio in the OTCA Division I state team tournament. The Jags advanced with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Shaker Heights at Jefferson Park today. Julie Lorincz (pictured) delivered the winning point for the Jaguars with a marathon 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Katrina Cassell in a match that lasted over three hours. Lorincz jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the match before Cassell rallied for five straight games to grab the first set. After a back and forth second set, Lorincz won the final two games to take the set 7-5 and force a decisive third set. Lorincz led throughout the final set and was able to hold off a late push from Cassell to claim a 6-4 victory.
Earlier in the team match, sophomore second singles player Melissa Martin played an excellent match to get SJA on the board first. After victories by Shaker Heights at third singles and first doubles, the Jags were able to tie the match at 2-2 with a win at second doubles. Shaker Heights got off to an early 3-2 lead in the first set before Kerrigan Ponsart and Angela Weiland settled in and rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 win.
The team victory moves the Jaguars to 8-2 on the season. The Jags now await the winner of Monday’s match between Rocky River and Walsh Jesuit to learn their OTCA NE Ohio quarterfinal opponent. SJA’s next team match is also on Monday as the Jags host Bay at Cleveland State’s Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
