Saint Joseph Academy is pleased to announce the hiring of Mr. A.J. Hyland as the Head Coach of the Jaguars’ basketball program.
“We are very excited to have Mr. Hyland lead our basketball program,” stated Saint Joseph Academy Athletic Director John Manuszak. “Mr. Hyland has proven himself to be a truly outstanding and innovative leader who supports the mission of Saint Joseph Academy and carries out the values of interscholastic athletics. We believe in his ability to create a positive, cohesive and supportive culture within our entire basketball program while providing student-athletes with a great overall experience. As a basketball program, we are committed to reaching high levels of success both on and off the court and believe in Mr. Hyland’s ability to guide our student-athletes towards those goals.”
Mr. Hyland was the President and Chief Executive Officer at Hyland Software from 2001-13. He served in the role of President from 1997-2001 after beginning his career at the company in 1993. Under Mr. Hyland’s leadership and guidance, Hyland Software became globally recognized as a leading software company and the largest in Ohio. For six years in a row, the company has been recognized nationally as one of Fortune Magazine’s Top 100 “Best Companies To Work For.” He graduated from Georgetown University in 1994 and St. Ignatius High School in 1990.
Mr. Hyland served as the Head Freshman basketball coach at Saint Joseph Academy in 2015-16. For the last 11 years, he has coached a variety of girls and boys CYO basketball teams, along with cross country and track & field teams.
Mr. Hyland and his wife Tricia have five children: Mary (Saint Joseph Academy Class of 2017), Patrick, Charlie, Bridie and Sarah. They are parishioners of Assumption Church in Broadview Heights.
Joining Mr. Hyland’s staff as a varsity assistant coach will be Miss Katie Berry ’07. Miss Berry has served previously as an assistant coach at Saint Joseph Academy, Trinity High School and Gilmour Academy. She also has coached AAU basketball for several years. She was a decorated player at SJA, earning All-District honors three times as well as being named All-Ohio Honorable Mention as a senior. She continued her career at Walsh University where she was a 1,000-point scorer and an All-American. She was inducted into the Walsh University Athletic Hall of Fame earlier this year and will be inducted in the SJA Athletic Hall of Fame later this month.
Mr. Hyland will meet with all returning basketball players and anyone interested in playing next year on Tuesday, April 23 at 3:00 p.m. in the board room. We will then welcome Mr. Hyland to the entire basketball community on Wednesday, April 24 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will take place in the auditorium and parents and students are encouraged to attend.
