Saint Joseph Academy freshman Amara Brahmbhatt ’24 punched her ticket to the state tournament on Saturday with a pair of victories at Districts. Brahmbhatt topped Elizabeth Stuart from Medina 6-2, 6-0 to advance to state. In her second match of the day, she beat three-time state qualifier Anna Kan from Canfield 6-1, 6-1 to finish 5th overall. Brahmbhatt is now 24-5 on the season and is the first freshman from SJA to qualify for the state tournament. She joins Tia Clemens ’23 as the first state qualifiers for SJA since 1978.
Clemens finished 4th at the district tournament as she fell to Hoover’s Tess Bucher 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals and Magnificat’s Audrey Smitek 6-3, 6-4 in the third place match. Brahmbhatt and Clemens will compete at the state singles tournament next week in Mason. The OHSAA will post the state tournament draws on Monday.
