The Jaguar tennis team swept Aurora today in an NEOTA Division B league match at the Barrington Country Club. Melissa Martin ’20 was quickly off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 victory to grab the Jaguars’ first point. The first doubles duo of Cassie Van Etten ’19/Abby Weaver ’19 were next off with a 6-1, 7-5 victory for their 21st win of the season. Weaver now has 71 career wins and is a match away from tying the all-time career victory record. The second doubles team of Catherine Mayer ’21/Maggie Griffin ’19 won the clinching point for SJA with a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (11-9) victory. The pair trailed 3-5 in the first set before winning the final four games to claim the set, and then rallied from match point down in the super tiebreaker to pull out the victory.
Kerrigan Ponsart ’20 and Mary Kate Kahl ’21 added straight set singles wins for the Jaguars to complete the sweep. Ponsart has the longest current winning streak on the team as she picked up her sixth consecutive victory and 16th overall on the season.
The victory moves SJA to 11-5 on the season and 3-2 in NEOTA Division B play. The Jaguars return to the courts tomorrow for their final NEOTA league match of the season and will celebrate Senior Night with a home match at Cleveland State University’s Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
