The Jaguar tennis team opened the season with the challenging Rocky River Invitational which featured a number of the top teams in Northeast Ohio. SJA came away with 18 points and a 5th place finish. The top finishers for the Jaguars were the second doubles team of Grace Kamis ’21/Tyler Schuerlein ’23 who grabbed a runner up finish. Kamis/Schuerlein beat Hudson 6-4, 6-1 in the first round before defeating Magnificat 6-4, 4-6, 10-2 in the semifinal. Delia Guzic ’23 picked up a third place finish in the third singles bracket as she defeated an opponent from Laurel 6-2, 6-1 in the first round and Hudson 8-0 in the third place match.

Tia Clemens ’23 added to the Jaguar team scoring with a fifth place finish at first singles. Clemens beat an opponent from Westlake 8-2 before closing strong to beat Hudson 8-5. At second singles, Melissa Martin ’20 rallied for an 8-6 victory over Rocky River in the backdraw and eventually finished in sixth, while the first doubles team of Kerrigan Ponsart ’20/Mary Kate Kahl ’21 beat Rocky River 8-4 before dropping a tough tiebreaker to Hudson to finish sixth.

The Jaguars will open dual match play with trips to Revere and Strongsville this week.
