The Saint Joseph Academy tennis team closed out the regular season with a 5-0 victory at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. The Jaguars were led by Division I district qualifiers Cassie Van Etten ’19 & Abby Weaver ’19 who played very well in a 6-2, 6-1 victory over NDCL’s Division II district qualifiers Sarah Harlan & Molly Lee. The win was Weaver’s 26th on the season and Van Etten’s 25th as they have taken over the top spots on SJA tennis’ all-time single season wins list.
The Jaguars were very efficient across all courts, dropping only five total games across the three singles matches. Melissa Martin ’20 finished the season with 17 wins after a 6-0, 6-0 victory at first singles. Kerrigan Ponsart ’20 picked up her 19th win of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at third singles, and Mary Kate Kahl closed out the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win. At second doubles, Maggie Griffin ’19 played the final match of her SJA career, as she teamed up with Catherine Mayer ’21 for a 6-3, 6-1 win. Griffin finishes her senior season with an 18-11 record.
The Jaguars conclude the season with a 12-6 record as a team, including a 3-3 record in NEOTA Division B play. The team also finished 2nd overall in the North Coast League and has put together the best three season stretch in program history. The Jaguars have gone 41-19 over the past three seasons with three consecutive appearances at the district tournament. Next up for SJA will be the Division I District Tournament at Springside Racquet Club where Van Etten/Weaver will take on Mayfield’s Hannah Kassaie/Caitlyn Hsu on Thursday morning.
