The Jaguar Rugby Girls traveled across town for a Rugby Ohio D-1 friendly with the up and coming John Marshall Lady Lawyers. This proved to be a great day of rugby! The game plan going into the day was to get all of the girls on the pitch and earn valuable game time experience.
The game started fast with the Varsity A side showing their combination of power, skill, and speed. The Jags got on the board in less than two minutes with Frankie Burns ’19 touching down in the corner to get the team going. The conversion attempt was no good. After getting their feet under them and getting a feel for where and what the Lady Lawyers were giving them it was the backline’s turn. Back to back slick try’s from centers Kara Whalen ‘19 and Erin Ward ‘19 exposed the Lady Lawyer’s backline and after both were converted by fullback Kate Pofok ‘21 the early lead was pushed to 19-0.
Knowing that they were only going to be on the pitch for 20-25 minutes, the Varsity Girls continued to keep the energy up and really pushed the pace of the game. Frankie Burns ‘19 showed off her power with a bruising 45 meter run off of a penalty through multiple John Marshall defenders to touch down under the posts for her second try of the day. Pofok’s ‘21 conversion was good. Jags went up 26-0.
After the kickoff and moving back into the opposing territory, Allexus Zielinski ‘19 took a quick tap and go penalty across the line adding to the Jags lead. Closing out their time on the pitch the backs continued to take advantage of the open space on the wing and Sia Schraff ‘20 burned down the sideline to finish the scoring. Kate Pofok was 5 out of 6 on her conversion attempts and as the 1st XV came off the field the score was 40-0.
The 2nd XV came onto the field and had to get right to game speed quickly. The game slowed down a bit and John Marshall began using their forwards to control the ball and work the inside game. The new group of girls led by Theresa Schnell ‘19, Abby Lewandowski ‘20, and Addie Lorek ‘20 battled hard with the John Marshall 1st XV. It was a midfield, back and forth battle for much of the next 15 minutes. The Lady Lawyers were able to power across to score with about 1 minute to go in the half bringing the score to 40-5 at the whistle.
The 2nd half of the game was a combination of 2nd and 3rd XV girls getting time on the pitch, some of them in their first game action of the season. The girls held on with strong performances turned in by several of the sophomore and freshman Jaguar ruggers. They held on to win the game 40-34.
