Tia Clemens ’23 became SJA’s first tennis state qualifier since 1978 with a pair of victories at the Division I District Tournament. Clemens entered as the #3 seed from the Elyria sectional and drew Niya Fried, the #2 seed from the Solon sectional. In the match of the day at districts, Clemens defeated Fried in a three hour marathon 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Clemens followed that up with an efficient 6-3, 6-2 victory in the second round over the top seed in her quarter of the draw, Elizabeth Stuart from Medina. Clemens is now 24-3 on the season and qualifies for the Division I State Tournament beginning on Friday, October 23. She will return to districts on Saturday for the seeding rounds and is guaranteed a top four finish in the district.
Amara Brahmbhatt ’24 will attempt to join Clemens on Saturday morning. Brahmbhatt defeated Brecksville’s Megan Baker 6-0, 6-2 in her first round match before falling to Hoover’s Tess Bucher 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. Brahmbhatt plays Elizabeth Stuart from Medina in the qualifying round on Saturday with a state berth on the line.
The doubles team of Mary Kate Kahl ’21/Delia Guzic ’23 fell in their first round match to Solon to conclude their season. Guzic hit the twenty win mark for the second straight season. Kahl finishes her career with sixty nine victories which ties her with Cassie Van Etten ’19 and Bethany Halusker ’08 for the third most victories in program history.
