Seniors Cassie Van Etten ’19 and Abby Weaver ’19 closed out their record-breaking SJA tennis careers with a loss at the Division I District tournament at Springside Racquet Club today. The Jaguar duo came into districts as the #4 seed from the Oberlin Sectional and drew #1 seeded Mayfield from the Solon Sectional. The Mayfield pair played #1 and 2 singles throughout the season and were returning state doubles qualifiers from 2017. Van Etten and Weaver put forth a good effort, but fell in straight sets.
Van Etten and Weaver close their career near the top of several SJA tennis record categories. Weaver went 26-8 this season, setting the school record for both single season wins and career wins with 76. Van Etten was 25-8 on the season and has the second and third most victories in a season with 25 in 2018 and 24 in 2016. Despite missing much of the 2017 season due to injury, Van Etten finishes with 69 wins which is the third most in school history. The pair had several key wins throughout the season, rallying for a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win in the deciding match at Western Reserve Academy. They also won the first doubles title at the Wooster Triway Invitational with another amazing comeback in a 6-7, 7-6, 10-6 victory. The pair was able to close out very successful careers with a well deserved appearance at districts today.
