The SJA tennis team had a fantastic day at the Division I Oberlin Sectional Tournament today. Every player won at least two matches highlighted by the senior doubles team of Cassie Van Etten ’19/Abby Weaver ’19 advancing to the district tournament. Van Etten/Weaver picked up three straight set wins capped off by a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Avon to qualify. With today’s results, Weaver has broken the SJA career wins record by picking up her 75th career win and has tied her own single-season record with 25 victories. The duo will play in the sectional semifinal tomorrow at Magnificat at 4 p.m. and has advanced to next Thursday’s OHSAA Division I District Tournament at Springside Racquet Club.
Melissa Martin ’20 picked up a pair of wins over Lakewood’s #1 and Midview’s #2 singles players before falling to #3 seed Sarah Robertson from Rocky River. Martin played a very high quality match in the quarterfinal against Robertson who was a state qualifier a year ago. Mary Kate Kahl ’21 and Kerrigan Ponsart ’20 also played very well in picking up two wins each on the day. Kahl had a bye and then defeated Parma’s #1 and Avon Lake’s #3 singles players to advance to the quarterfinals where she fell to the defending state champion from Magnificat. Ponsart defeated Avon Lake’s #2 and Avon’s #1 singles players before falling to the #4 seed in the third round.
Catherine Mayer ’21/Maggie Griffin ’19 won a pair of three set matches to advance to the doubles quarterfinal. The duo avenged a loss from last week by defeating Avon Lake’s second doubles 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 and a team from Elyria 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Overall, the team combined to go 11-4 on the day for a very successful sectional tournament performance. The Jaguars play their final dual match of the season on Monday at NDCL.
